Dressing for the office holiday party can be tricky…it’s a party and it’s still business. What do you wear that’s festive and still business appropriate? Here are some quick tips.
The professional environment dictates that all outfits must be modest: keep both cleavages covered, clothing can be fitted but not clingy/body-conscious, thighs should be covered with clothes or opaque tight/leggings, and more skin should be covered than is exposed. Here is a step-by-step guide for creating your outfit.
Step 1: Start with base pieces made from your usual professional attire. Choose a dress, your favorite blazer, a skirt and blouse, pants and sweater, a suit, your power pumps…whatever you love and is in good condition.
Step 2: Add 1-2 pieces of clothing or accessories that you would wear to a party such as: a bustier, a feather shrug, a lacy top or skirt, strappy dancing shoes, big earrings. Pick your favorites!
Step 3: Add 2-3 pieces that have color, sparkle and/or shine. Look for a sparkly top or skirt, a colorful bag, shimmery jewelry, metallic shoes…whatever you love. Some of the items in Step 1 or 2 may overlap in this category too.
Here are some examples!
Finally, work out your outfits in advance to make sure all the elements fit, are clean and look good together. This will help you avoid last minute stress and settling for the same holiday dress you’ve worn to the office party for the last 10 years!
